Ipswich Town wrap up £20m Abdul Fatawu deal from Leicester City
Ipswich Town have completed the £20m signing of Abdul Fatawu from Leicester City on a five-year deal that could rise to £23m with add-ons. The 22-year-old winger arrived at the club’s La Manga training camp yesterday, just days after Ghana’s World Cup exit.
Speaking to TownTV, Fatawu said he’s ready to deliver goals, assists and energy to Portman Road. “I’m happy to be here and can’t wait to get started,” he told the club’s official channel. “Ipswich Town is a tough team - when I used to play against them they gave me a tough time as well. They have good players, so I’m very happy to now be part of the family.”
What the new signing brings to Ipswich Town
Fatawu arrives with nine goals and seven assists from last season at Leicester, including a stunning long-range strike from inside his own half against Town in December. “One of my best goals,” he said of the effort. “I hope to give it all and give you that kind of goal now as an Ipswich player.”
The winger also played four games for Ghana at the World Cup, all off the bench, including the 0-0 draw with England. “The World Cup is a big stage,” he said. “It’s one of the biggest dreams of any player and it was amazing.”
Why Fatawu’s move matters for Ipswich Town
Ipswich are second in the Championship with 84 points from 46 games, 11 points behind leaders Coventry, and chasing a second straight promotion. Fatawu’s arrival adds firepower to a side that has already scored 80 goals this season but needs to tighten up defensively after conceding 47 times.
His direct style and eye for goal could prove crucial in the final stretch of a tight race. “I’m someone who likes to always make the fans happy,” he said. “Bring energy to the team, do what I can to help the team, score goals and make assists - in general to just help the team get forward.”
What comes next for Fatawu and the Blues
Fatawu has already tasted Premier League football with Leicester in 2023/24, though he played just 13 games before rupturing his ACL on international duty. Fully recovered, he’s eager for a second shot at the top flight with Ipswich.
“Every player dreams to be in this competition,” he insisted. “I’m happy to be part of this family, to be in this competition and to fight for Ipswich Town.” The Blues now turn their focus to the new campaign with Fatawu as one of their headline additions.
League standing: Ipswich are second in the Championship with 84 points, 23 wins, 15 draws and eight losses from 46 games, with recent form reading WDDWD.
