Ipswich Town is close to signing Burnley midfielder Florentino Luis on a permanent move for around £17m, as the club looks to strengthen its squad ahead of the new season. The Portuguese player, who has been described as 'exceptional,' made 31 appearances in the Premier League last season with Burnley after joining under an obligation to buy from Benfica.
Following manager Kieran McKenna's departure and Gary O'Neil's appointment as his successor, Ipswich have already made eight first-team signings. These include Emerson (striker), Daizen Maeda (forward), and Kjell Scherpen (goalkeeper). The club is still looking to add more players before the Premier League season kicks off in three weeks.
Ipswich are now working on personal terms with Luis, with a medical scheduled soon. Hull City was also reportedly interested but has since dropped out of the race for the player. Luis previously made 183 appearances for Benfica and contributed to two league titles before joining Burnley last summer under an obligation to buy from the Portuguese club.
The signing would strengthen Ipswich's midfield, as they look to improve their performance in the new season after narrowly avoiding relegation last year. With a budget of around £85m already spent on eight players across various positions, including Abdul Fatawu, Cedric Kipre, Chuba Akpom, and Issa Diop, Ipswich are expected to continue their transfer activity until September 1st.
