Ipswich Town's seasoned midfielder Ashley Young has announced his decision to retire from professional football at the close of the current season, bringing an illustrious career spanning over two decades to an end. The 40-year-old, currently a key figure for the Championship side, shared the news via an Instagram post on Thursday, April 30, marking the upcoming Saturday as potentially his final game.

Young's extensive career saw him make more than 750 club appearances, netting 88 goals across various top-flight teams. His journey began at Watford in 2003, leading to spells at Aston Villa, Manchester United, Inter Milan, and Everton, before his final tenure with Ipswich Town at Portman Road. This remarkable path, as he described, was a dream he only imagined as a boy.

Starting his professional journey with Watford, Ashley Young played a pivotal role in their promotion to the Premier League in 2006. His impressive performances led to a move to Aston Villa in 2007, where he quickly established himself as one of the league's most effective wide players, earning the prestigious PFA Young Player of the Year award in 2009.

His exceptional talent caught the eye of legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson, leading to a significant transfer to Manchester United in 2011. Young enjoyed his most decorated period at Old Trafford, securing the Premier League title in the 2012-13 season, the FA Cup in 2016, and the Europa League in 2017. Over nine seasons, he seamlessly transitioned from an attacking winger to a full-back, eventually serving as club captain before his departure in 2020.

Following his successful stint at Manchester United, Young ventured to Italy, winning the Serie A title with Inter Milan in the 2020-21 season. He then returned to Aston Villa, followed by spells at Everton and finally, Ipswich Town. On the international stage, Ashley Young earned 39 caps for England between 2007 and 2018, proudly representing his country at the 2012 European Championship and the 2018 FIFA World Cup.

From Sefton Road to Portman Road, Ashley Young's career has been a testament to longevity, adaptability, and consistent performance at the highest level. His retirement marks the end of an era for a player who has left an indelible mark on English and European football, including his recent contribution to Ipswich Town's campaign.
