Former Ipswich Town midfielder Kevin Horlock is back in football management after being named the new boss of Canvey Island this week. The 53-year-old takes charge of the Isthmian League North Division side, who were relegated from the Premier Division last season, following the departure of Garry Kimble.
Horlock's return comes after a short break from the game. He left his role at Maldon & Tiptree in May and spent the last three months working for his new assistant's landscaping business. "You know what it was a weird one. Obviously, I left Maldon and wasn't in involved in football for a few months," Horlock told the Ipswich Star. "My assistant Pip Boyland has got his own landscaping business, so he said, come and work for me."
What did Horlock achieve at his last club?
His spell away from the dugout followed a successful second stint at Maldon & Tiptree. Horlock took over there in February 2025 after stepping down from Needham Market. He then led the club to promotion into Step 3 of the non-league pyramid for the first time in its history. Last season, he also guided them to the FA Cup first round, where they were defeated by then-League One side Port Vale. That proven track record of development attracted Canvey Island, who are looking to rebuild after a difficult campaign.
Why did the Canvey Island job appeal?
Horlock admitted the call from the club came as a surprise but was immediately compelling. He cited the board's clear ambition as the primary reason for his excitement about the new challenge. Having a trusted assistant in Pip Boyland already in place also provides a solid foundation for his work at Park Lane. The immediate task is to stabilise the team and plot a course back up the Isthmian League structure.
Where does this leave Ipswich Town currently?
While a former player start a new chapter, the current Ipswich Town squad is preparing for its next Premier League fixture. Kieran McKenna's side, sitting 14th with three points from three games, face Crystal Palace away on September 12th. The team has scored four goals but conceded eight in its opening matches, leaving it with a negative goal difference. They will be without the services of Azor Matusiwa, Jack Taylor, and Jaden Philogene-Bidace for that trip to Selhurst Park, as confirmed on the club's injuries page. Fans can track the team's progress in the standings as the season develops.
Horlock's first game in charge of Canvey Island is set for this weekend as they look to start their season positively. His full squad will be assessed ahead of the Isthmian North fixture.
