Former Ipswich Town defender Barry Cotter has completed a transfer to Bulgarian top-flight club CSKA Sofia. The 27-year-old Irishman has signed a three-year deal with the club after leaving Derry City for an undisclosed fee, worth close to six figures including potential add-ons.
Cotter's move comes as Ipswich Town themselves prepare for their next Premier League fixture, sitting 14th in the table with three points from their opening three games. Kieran McKenna's side, who have scored four goals but conceded eight, travel to face Crystal Palace on September 12th looking to improve on a recent run of form that reads LLW.
Barry Cotter's performances in European competition directly led to this transfer. He played every minute of Derry City's Europa League double-header against CSKA Sofia last season, impressing the Bulgarian club's scouts across both legs. His 30 appearances and two goals for the League of Ireland side last term cemented his reputation as a reliable defender. CSKA Sofia, who finished fourth in the Bulgarian First League last season and lifted the 2026 Bulgarian Cup, are currently seeking a new manager after Hristo Yanev's resignation, but they moved swiftly to secure Cotter's signature.
Cotter made four appearances for Ipswich Town during a brief but memorable spell at Portman Road. His debut came in a 1-0 home win over Barnsley in February 2018, a match that proved to be Mick McCarthy's final game in charge. Cotter started that match and was substituted in the 56th minute, a decision that was met with boos from a section of the home support. After the final whistle, McCarthy delivered a dramatic post-match press conference. "It was a disgraceful reaction, that, but I won’t have to listen to it again because that’s my last game," the manager said when asked about the fan response. He then stated, "I'm out of here," banged the desk in front of him, and walked away, ending his tenure.
After departing Ipswich, Cotter's career took him to Barnsley before he returned to Ireland with Derry City in February of this year. His consistent performances there, particularly in Europe, have now earned him a significant move to a club with continental ambitions. Upon signing for CSKA Sofia, Cotter posted on social media: "New week, new opportunities, same goals."
While a former player moves on, the current Ipswich Town squad is fully focused on the challenges of the Premier League. The team finds itself six points behind early leaders Manchester City and will be looking to their squad for solutions as they aim to climb the standings. Their immediate task is that away trip to Selhurst Park, a key early-season match against a Palace side sitting just one place above them in 13th. Barry Cotter begins his new three-year chapter in Bulgaria as Ipswich Town continues its own in the English top flight.
