The Premier League's Key Match Incidents Panel has backed the decision to allow Harry Maguire's controversial goal in Manchester United's 5-2 win over Ipswich Town on August 30. The ruling concluded the Manchester United defender's handball was accidental, a decision that went against the view of Match of the Day pundits Shay Given and Ellen White.
Sky Sports Football reported the panel's findings, which stem from an incident with the score at 1-1. Maguire's shot from outside the box deflected off Ipswich defender Jacob Greaves and into the net, with the goal officially recorded as an own goal. The ball had first struck Maguire's right arm, prompting a VAR review by official Jarred Gillett, who recommended awarding the goal.
The KMI Panel voted 4-1 to support referee Craig Pawson's on-field decision. Its published notes stated that Maguire's arms were within his bodyline, making the contact with the ball accidental. It also noted that Maguire was not the direct goalscorer. One dissenting panel member, however, considered the handball to be deliberate. This season marks the first time the Premier League has published the panel's findings on key incidents, with the group comprising three former players or coaches, one league representative, and one from the referees' body, PGMOL.
Immediate reaction from television analysts was strongly critical of the decision. Former goalkeeper Shay Given was unequivocal in his assessment. "It is a clear handball," Given said. "His hands are not in a natural position. It is a deliberate handball and a deliberate motion towards the ball." Former England striker Ellen White agreed, focusing on Maguire's arm position. "It is a very unnatural position to be going to protect your face," White said. "It does feel like a handball and it does feel deliberate."
The 5-2 defeat at Old Trafford is part of a challenging start to the season for Ipswich, who currently sit 14th in the Premier League with three points from three games. Their record shows one win and two losses, with a goal difference of minus four after scoring four and conceding eight. They are six points behind early leaders Manchester City. Kieran McKenna's squad also faces injury concerns, with Azor Matusiwa, Jack Taylor, and Jaden Philogene-Bidace currently sidelined.
Attention now turns to the next fixture, an important away match against Crystal Palace on September 12. Palace are one place above Ipswich in 13th, making it a significant early-season encounter. Fans can view the full fixtures schedule for the coming weeks. The team will be looking to improve on a recent form line of LLW and build some momentum. Their next challenge is at Selhurst Park on Saturday.
