Ipswich Town academy manager Ben Chenery has spoken about the success of the club's first year as a Category One academy. The 49-year-old started his role last summer, having worked in various positions within the academy.
What happened in the 2025/26 season?
Town Under-21s enjoyed an excellent inaugural campaign at the level, with John McGreal's side finishing fifth in the table. The Blues' U18s side struggled in their league, but they did enjoy an impressive FA Youth Cup run, reaching the last 16 of the competition.
Future plans for the academy
Chenery discussed key points from the 2025/26 season and beyond, including the first Premier League 2 campaign, next season's EFL Trophy, released players and new academy intake. The young Blues will compete in the 2026/27 EFL Trophy after being invited as one of the 16 U21 teams from Premier League Category One academies in the competition.
Upcoming challenges
A total of 13 young Blues are departing the club at the end of their contracts this summer, with the club set to support them on their next chapter. As of 01 Jul 2026, Ipswich Town sits 2nd in the Championship, with 84 points from 46 games, and a recent form of WDDWD. Their goal difference stands at +33, with 80 scored and 47 conceded.
